There are two types of isolated  fortresses in Al-Ahsa. The first are towers and the second are palaces. These forts are usually large rectangular buildings,  with a courtyard in their center and surrounded by rooms, stables and forts in at least four of the corners. They must be large enough to house a whole company of cavalry and infantry. The most significant of the fortresses are Ahmar Tower, Askar Palace, Barzan Palace, Hazm Palace, Hizam Palace, Baseera Tower, Waziyah Palace, and Wijaj Palace.
